Shortly after
graduation I heard Uncle Sam call, and spent two years in the
Women's Army Corp (WAC), first at Ft McClellan, Anniston, Alabama
where I attending boot camp and clerical school, and was transferred
to Ft. MacArthur, San Pedro, California 4 months later where I was
promoted to Sp4 before leaving in 1961 because my mother was dying
of cancer. I felt I wanted to be with her last days, and she
died 4 months too late for me to re-enlist without attending boot
camp again for a short time.
Back in Sarasota I
met Donald Mansfield who was from Albany, Ga., and we married in
1965. We had two daughters, Julia Renae, and Amy Lee before his
death in 1973. Unfortunately I remarried to a New Yorker, who to
this quiet Southern gal was quite the opposite. I divorced him 9
years later, and have been single ever since.
I recently retired
from 31 years at Brown & Brown Insurance, formerly Ernest Smith
Insurance Agency in April, 2009, and now am enjoying myself doing
crafts, spoiling grandchildren, boating on our 21' Tohoe boat in
Charlotte Harbor where I catch a fish or two, mostly sharks, but my
prize was a 15lb Triple Tail.
I am living in
North Port with my oldest daughter, Julia, to make it easier on me
for retirement and to enjoy traveling when I get the chance. Just
got back from a trip to Montana and Yellowstone, and had the time of
my life enjoying nature and family.
Look forward to
meeting old friends, and making new acquaintances.
The pictures are
from Beatnik Senior Day at Lido, where we all had a ball. Hope you
enjoy them. |
